The Unfortunately Contacts Stopped error has been faced by many of the Android smartphone users and especially by Samsung Galaxy, Note users and also some Lenovo devices as well.

Most of the times this error will occur due to the third party apps which are installed on your handheld device. While installing the third party apps you may be granted access to your contact knowingly or unknowingly. Few apps like Facebook, Facebook messenger, Google +, Twitter, Whatsapp & etc is known to be linked with contacts app may cause this error. Due to this error, users can’t open the contacts list to search or add contacts.

Solution 1: Reset App Preferences

Step 1:- Head to “ Settings “ and then tap on “ Apps “.
Step 2:- Next tap on the menu (Three dots) on the top right corner or bottom of the screen.
Step 3:- Then tap on “ Reset app preferences ”.

Solution 2: Clearing cache and data

First of all, make sure your contacts are synced to your Gmail account before doing below steps.
Step 1:- First go to “ Settings “.
Step 2:- Next open “ Apps “and then tap on “ All “ option.
Step 3:- Now select “ Contacts “ or “ People “ option and then tap on “ Clear cache & data ”.
If you’re a Marshmallow user then try the below extra step because clear cache & data has been no longer available in the same place in Android M.
Step 4:- Select “ Storage “ and then tap on “ Clear Data “.
Step 5:- Reboot the device and check whether you still face the issue.

Solution 3: Change Date &Time Format

This might be a weird solution, but to the surprise, this solution fixed this unfortunately contacts stopped error by simply editing the date and time settings.

Step 1:- Go to “ Settings “ and tap on “ Date & Time “.
Step 2:- Next tap on “ Use 24-hour format “ .

Solution 4: Disable Apps

If the above solutions didn’t work for you then try to disable Google + app which is also worked for many users.

Step 1:- Head to “ Settings “ and then tap on “ Apps “.
Step 2:- Next select “ All “ then scroll down and find “ Google + “ app
Step 3:- Now tap on “ Disable “ and That’s it.
